Rifflandia 2011

by Christa Simonds I always thought if I hadn’t heard of something, it couldn’t be that good. In september, Rifflandia proved me wrong, one-hundred times over. Mother Mother, Malajube, City and Colour and De La Soul were a few of the 110 bands that played at Rifflandia this year. Two stages at the new venue, Royal Athletic Park, showed how organized the event was, with one stage starting as soon as the other finished. B Channel News spoke with some of the members of the Besnard Lakes, USS, Olenka and Malajube. The humour, the talent and the down to earth attitudes are sure to take these bands much further than our own Vancouver Island. B Channel would like to thank the bands that took a few minutes from their hectic tour schedules to sit down and have a chat with us.

FEATURED VIDEO INTERVIEWS AND PERFORMANCES

NikTex

NikTex is sexiness with barefoot appeal. Explain. The sound of lead singer Nikole Texidor is raw and sultry while the accompaniment of Colin Nealis (stand-up bass), Jake Jenne (drums), Kate Hutching (back vocals) and fellow NikTex founder Manjinder Benning (guitar) adds a spontaneity which is both refreshing and primitive. Olenka

Rifflandia seems to have a talent for finding amazing artists who are not found on mainstream radio stations. This was definitely the case with Olenka and the Autumn Lovers. Click here to watch a performance and interview with Olenka.

Malajube

Malajube is a French speaking group comprised of Julien Mineau on guitar and lead vocals, Francis Mineau on drums, Mathieu Cournoyer on bass, and Thomas Augustin on keyboards and vocals. Click here to watch a performance and interview with band members.

The Besnard Lakes

The Besnard Lakes classify their music as Psychedelic Rock. Founding member Jace Lasek definitely looked the rocker part, as we interviewed him in a brightly lit hallway at the Metro before their performance. Click here to watch a performance and interview with band members.

USS - Ubiquitous Synergy Seekers

Heavy electronic beats and experimental sounds mixed and delivered by Human Kebab on the turntable paired with the acoustic guitar and vocals of Boo-Schultz made for a sound that had the audience at Rifflandia swaying and break-dancing.
